Lake Matheson is a small glacial lake in South Westland, New Zealand, near the township of Fox Glacier. The lake is famous for its reflected views of Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The excellent reflecting properties are due to the dark brown colour of the water as a result of organic matter leached from the humus of the forest floor.
Dawn and dusk are the best times to enjoy the reflections in the lake and the photograph I used as my reference source was taken in the late afternoon. The range of colours that are the reflection of the sunset on the mountains and then on the lake are amazing in their depth and variation, sometimes red/orange and sometimes more pink.
