Located on the Heather Jock Loop Track at the head of Mount Judah Road, from the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, 2km south of Glenorchy, South Island, New Zealand.
The Jean Hut is made of flattened 44 gallon drums on a wooden frame. Built around 1915, it was used until some time in the 1950’s as accommodation for miners in the nearby scheelite mines. It is now a DoC historical hut.
The Jean Hut is now the only survivor of the Red Huts built at the start of the twentieth century. It is a fine example of what the men lived in while working the numerous scheelite mines in the area.
It features a series of rocks suspended from the roof to hold the roof in place in high winds. The interior is restored to the style that it would have been.
The hut is listed in the New Zealand Tramper as being at an altitude of 950 metres. It is not intended for overnight use and it has no facilities, including no water.
