The Castlepoint Lighthouse stands on a rugged area of coast on the east coast of New Zealand near the bottom of the North Island & although I have never visited the site, I have heard much about it. I was interested in painting this iconic scene & found an excellent reference photo. It is still a work in progress but a lovely scene.

I have finally started on a new painting! With the help of family, I have chosen to paint a scene from the Wairarapa, the famous Castlepoint Lighthouse. This is a beautiful scene but one which presents fresh challenges for me, all of which I am looking forward to … I think! At this stage I have sketched in the various elements of the composition & started “blocking in” the painting which basically means covering all the white of the canvas in a way that defines the various parts of the painting with the finer details being added in the next

Work has been a bit slow on this project as we are still getting through all that has been involved in moving house & in setting up home again! What has encouraged me has been the positive comments folk have made about this painting when they have visited with us to check out our new dwelling plus my studio & office setup. The tall grass around the dinghy has required a lot of work & getting the right contrast in the clouds has been a challenge but I am happy with progress thus far. Looking forward to being able to

I have just blocked in part of the first layer of a new painting that I am excited about. The intense sky is a feature & the lonely image of an old dinghy amongst the sand dunes & sea grasses makes an interested subject.

Heading down the back straight. Still some details to finish in the water in the foreground & with the grass in the foreground, some more layers in the clouds, some more contrast in the grass hill area in the middle of the painting & than I can add the man & his dog!!

I now have two paintings on display and for sale in at the The Wine Box Café and Restaurant at 239 Dairy Flat Highway, Albany Village, North Shore, Auckland. The restaurant is in the quaint building that was the Albany Pottery studio and shop. I am very grateful to Lenka the Owner/Manager of the restaurant who has been very helpful and gracious.
